| SupportQ. How do I get technical support, and what does it cost? --
A. New users receive 2 hours of free telephone consultation, because we feel it
is worth the time to help get users 'up to speed' with the software.
Usually this time is spent going through the steps of setting up a regatta, but
may be used for any Regatta Master functions. Telephone support is free if the issue is due to a software glitch, but
otherwise it is billable at our discretion. Our current billing rate
(2007)
is $150/hr billed in 15 minute increments. LicensingQ. How is Regatta Master licensed? -- A. Regatta Master is licensed to the organization. The software may be installed on multiple computers as long as they belong to or are used by the same organization. The license is keyed on the user's Organization ID. Q. My club has a licensed copy of Regatta Master. Can we share it with another club? -- A. No. Your license only allows you to use the software within your organization - that is, to manage your own club and any regattas that your club hosts. You may not share it either directly, or indirectly, with another club. Directly would be, for instance, giving another club your registration key. Indirectly would be using your license of Regatta Master to manage another club's regattas or membership on their behalf. Q. I don't belong to a club. I want to hire myself out to other organizations to run their regattas with Regatta Master. Can I do this under the license agreement? -- A. Not under the standard license agreement, as this would be indirectly sharing your license (see the previous question). You could certainly use Regatta Master to run those regattas, but each organization hosting the regatta would need to purchase a license. Q. How does licensing work? -- A. The license is keyed on the user's Organization ID. The software runs in "unregistered" mode when first installed, which limits the ability to print and publish results to the web, but otherwise is fully functional. You register by entering the your Organization ID and registration code, which are sent to you by email once you have purchased the software license. Once registered, the software no longer has any printing or web publishing restrictions. Q. If I don't care about the printing restrictions, can I just use Regatta Master in 'unregistered' mode? -- A. Only for the purpose of evaluating the software. Fully evaluating Regatta Master could take several months, which is why there is no longer a time restriction to do so; however, using the software for any purpose other than evaluation, even if you could work around the printing limitations, would be a violation of the End User License Agreement (EULA). Q. Can I evaluate Regatta Master by running a regatta with it? -- A. Yes. However, without the ability to print or publish reports, schedules and results, it would be difficult to do so. Also, you would not be able to get technical support, which is an important consideration when using the software for the first time to manage a regatta. Error MessagesQ. I updated Regatta Master from the website, and now I am getting
error messages. What is happening? -- A. Depending upon the
number of revisions between your update and the last prior one, there may be a
number of new or changed table definitions. Usually these changes are
handled by the program, but sometimes default values are not updated with the
program update. To make sure all table and field definitions are updated
correctly, click Utilities, Attach Tables. Select Database ID 1 from
the dropdown and click Update Tables. When this completes, do the same
with Database ID 2. Q. I've started getting messages saying that my relationships were damaged. Is this a personal observation? - - A. Nothing personal, but sometimes the database becomes corrupted or damaged due to power failure or exiting the program unexpectedly. This can cause records to be deleted or their keys damaged, while dependent records (records that are related to those records) remain intact. The dependent records thus have no valid relationship. There are two steps to correcting this problem: 1. Click Utilities, Repair Database. This will repair both the current data database and your user database. 2. Click Utilities, Attach Tables and click Verify Relationships. If there are data relationship problems, you will be prompted to correct them. This will open the Repair Relationship screen. Please consult the online Regatta Master manual for detailed instructions for correcting relationship problems. HandicapsQ. How does handicapping work? -- A. Handicaps are derived from handicap tables, which give a certain value, in seconds (and fractions of a second) to an average boat age. In the case of USRA handicap tables, the value depends not only on the age, but the boat type. For instance, the table handicap for age 53 in a 1X is 16.9 seconds, but in an 8+ the handicap is 13.5 seconds. This table value is the 'absolute' handicap. The handicaps are then applied within each heat so that the boat with the lowest age in a given heat has a handicap of 0. This is done by subtracting the table handicap of the youngest boat from the table handicaps of all the boats in the heat (including the youngest boat). This calculated value is the 'relative' handicap, and is the value that is published in the results. The relative handicap is subtracted from each boat's unadjusted finish time to determine the adjusted, or handicapped, finish time. Q. What is the Age Cap for? A. -- If multiple age groups are raced in the same event, the event may be handicapped. If a boat in a higher age category chooses to "row down" into this handicapped event, and there is an event for the higher age category, then the handicap of that boat is 'capped' at the highest age in the event. For example, if there is an event combining category A through category C (maximum age 49) and another event combining category D through category F (or D+ for all ages 50 and above), then a boat with an average age of 62 would only be handicapped up to age 49 if it entered the first event. In other words, it would be treated as if the boat average age was 49. In this same example, if there was not an event for the higher age group, the regatta committee would have to decide whether or not to apply an age cap.
